Career & Profile: Colin Sloss - Managing Director
My contracting career began during 1986 when I was employed as a shovel hand with Calcon Asphalt Ltd. I enjoyed myself and was eager to strive forward. Within 12 months, at the young age of 19 I was promoted to Calcon’s construction foreperson.
One of the largest & most rewarding contracts during this foremanship was working on the major revamp of Victoria Square. I was in charge of the daily groundwork’s and once completed, resulted in Calcon winning an achievement award in the New Zealand Caltex Awards (pictured right).
In December 1991, Kate & I commenced Local Construction Ltd. We worked in the public sector doing driveways & also as a sub-contractor to larger firms, before branching directly into infrastructure contracts for the Christchurch City Council a few years later.
We continued to grow the company over the next 14 years completing a variety of contracts & winning numerous awards. The challenges were exciting and rewarding.
This photo below was taken in 2000 with approximately 50 staff.

In the 4 years following we expanded to included a large traffic management unit with 2 attenuator trucks & chip-sealing operation city street works contracts.
We successfully crew Local Construction Ltd to 95 staff over a 14 year period then successfully sold to City Care in October 2004.

Kerb & Channel NZ Ltd & NZ Traffic Management Ltd was established February 2006 in the Queenstown & Southern Lakes areas & continued to gain a great reputation & crew to 30 staff & restructured our company & name to Drainage & Roading NZ Ltd after completing the our work in the Jacks Point Resort.
